A RUBRIC is a pedagogical tool to structure assessment of student learning through the use of a guide to the scoring of an assignment. It is useful in determining and differentiating levels of performance in learning by examining the key elements of an assignment and defining characteristics of quality in levels of mastery. Typically the key elements of an assignment are the criteria that a faculty member considers in what makes up a complete and acceptable submission. Each of the criteria can be described in terms of how the performance of the student in that criterion will be scored. Typically ratings, definitions, and examples are used for each of the criterion.
